Island, Iceberg 

Island, Iceberg is an edition of five artists' books inspired by the eight months I spent living in Okayama, Japan from 2012 to 2013. 

The Iceberg Concept of Culture likens the alluring artifacts of a society foreign to a traveler, including fashion, cuisine, and festivals, to the easily visible portion of an iceberg. This book shares the experience of trying to comprehend the larger and more consequential qualities of a society such as money and gender roles that, like the rest of the iceberg, lie below the surface and out of sight. The hand carved cover shows the majority of Japan’s land mass lying below the surface of a suggested water line, similar to a metaphorical iceberg suspended in the ocean.
